For a long time I was very deep in the mainstream. In the mid 80’s I would’ve called myself conservative if someone had asked. Much of that, though, had more to do with the fact that I didn’t know of any other way of life. I didn’t really think of going “off the beaten path” because I was so deep in it that I didn’t even realize there was a path let alone that there were ways to get off of it. That was, until I visited Sage’s mom back in the mid 90’s. With a few small exceptions, Sage’s mom, Kite, has lived on a large plot of land in the country with several other women since I’ve know her. Dwellings on the land range from renovated barns to tipis, to adapted storage sheds. Most have electricity (delivered by extension cord) but none has running water (the kitchen is served by a hose for washing and there is a tap that goes to a well for drinking). The only net access available is dialup. The cost to maintain such a simplified life is significantly less than living a “mainstream” life (at one point when we were living in the yurt we could get by on as little as $300/month) allowing one to spend more time doing what is important to them and less time working for someone else.
That visit changed my life by opening my eyes to what other options there might be. And I began to wonder – how others found out about the existence of options other than the mainstream. On a recent visit to the land, I talked to Kite and the other women about how they found out that there was a path other than that which their parents chose.
How about you? Are you living off the beaten path in some way? Care to share how you found your way there? Leave a note in the comments or send an audio comment!

Before the idea for this podcast occurred to me, I had met a few folks at a local cafe here in Toronto and we tossed around the idea of having a podcast that was simply a recording of a group of folks in a cafe talking about whatever issues came to mind. While the others never were interested enough to follow through with the podcast, my enthusiasm for creating a collaborative podcast led me to coming up with the idea for this podcast. Almost a year after the first meeting in the Toronto cafe, I found myself in Montreal for Podcamp Montreal and we took the opportunity to record a couple of live episodes. This first episode was recorded at La Brulerie St. Denis where we discussed whether or not “new media” is really that new if it is commercially supported.

This episode is a follow up episode to a discussion Daryl Cognito and I had about change in society. While you don’t have to listen to that one to understand this one, it does provide a bit of background and you might want to go back and give it a listen.

In this episode our contributors explore their own personal crusades as well as some of the little hypocrisies behind them. Not always the most family friendly language here – people with young children and/or sensitive ears may wish to wait for the next one…

At Podcasters Across Borders last weekend, I made a pitch to try to encourage folks to join in the fray and start or contribute to episodes here. As it turns out, though I didn’t know it at the time (and was nervous enough not knowing so that’s a good thing), I was being filmed.
I’m working on some new and interesting ways for new and experienced podcasters to join in. Stay tuned for details.
Come on over to the google group and join in the discussion. Don’t be shy – go ahead and introduce yourself and just dive in. We’re all friendly people and love to help new folks get started. All you need is a microphone and an opinion.
